Experiences Of Watering Office Bonsai

Plant absorbs moisture and nutrients in the water via the root. The trunk and branches transfer water from root to leaves. So water becomes critical to the plant growth process with any size of bonsai. I have learned a lot from experiences with years.

There is no standard of watering quantity; all should depend on the plant habit, plant size, the season and temperature as well. There are many sizes of plant pots: big, small, deep and shallow bonsai pot. Different size pot has variety water holding capability.

Generally, less water should be provided with large pot in deep size, due to the large soil holder with more water inside. Small plant pot prefers comparative more water, because there is less soil helps to keep moisture

Different pot material
More water should be provided into the bonsai in concrete tubs. Less water should be sprayed above the plant in earthenware pot.
If the pot is made by porcelain, watering schedule may be arranged as every other week, due to the poor water permeability. This material may keep any moisture inside of the container forever.
Variety soil property
Bonsai in clay soil requires less watering, while bonsai in sandy soil prefers more often watering.
Depends on leaf size
Broad leaves plants need more water contribute to smoothly moisture vapor. Needle leaves plant prefer to keep in dry soil like pines.
Growth situation
More water should be provided to fast growing bonsai, which needs more water to support growth requirement. Many slow growing bonsai need less water to keep the stable situation in balance moisture and temperature.
My general experience
Usually I tap the pot helps to decide watering more or less. I give more water in the pot with clear sound voice and I skip the pot sounds deep voice. I keep the water container in door over night to get the similar water temperature with environment to avoid hurt root by over or below water temperature. More often watering schedule in summer morning and evening to ensure the soil moisture. Spray water is my favorite watering method to keep soil.
